Tips to stay in shape if you don't have access to fitness equipment

Frequent travel for business or pleasure can make it hard to maintain a consistent exercise and nutrition routine. While some experienced fitness buffs find that all of the fitness equipment they need to get a good workout is a hotel floor and walls, many less-experienced travelers find that they need at least some guidance with the support of fitness equipment to take the place of their normal exercise equipment or their usual hometown fitness club. The following fitness equipment products might make your next trip more convenient for your fitness routine: For a good cardio workout, while on the go, don’t forget to pack a pair of comfortable walking or running shoes. It’s amazing how a brisk, 30-minute walk through your overnight city will give your metabolism the pick-up it needs. Not up for walking? Pack a jump rope and stay in shape in the comfort of your own room. Want some fitness equipment that travels light and compact for your stay? Surgical tubing can provide a good resistance workout; many online fitness equipment stores sell resistance bands. Need to strengthen those arms, abs, or quads? How about push-ups, sit-ups, or squats – again, all can be done in the comfort of your own room.

Of course, there are those of us (and we know who we are…) who need to structure of a fitness club to structure our workout routine. But what does the business traveler do when faced with the obstacles of a fitness membership that doesn’t travel with them? That is exactly what we asked at GymFusion; and exactly why we decided to provide the service we do. We know the business traveler who needs the fitness equipment and structure of the fitness club. There are those of us who just don’t have the motivation to exercise with the fitness equipment that we’ve packed in our overnight bag, no matter how ideal and convenient that might sound. GymFusion has worked diligently to provide a network of gyms for your membership so that while you are busy with business anywhere throughout the United States, that you can find a fitness club in the area you are staying. Tucson gyms and Phoenix gyms were where we began our network of flexible memberships, and now the need for business travelers to work out at a fitness club has grown, and we are meeting the demand with a national reach.

Rebecca Johnson and Bill Tulin, authors of Travel Fitness suggest the floowing ideas for those long flights and trips:

  1. Book a daytime arrival, especially if you are on a west-to-east flight. Once you are there, drag yourself outside and do something active in the daylight. You can recover from jet lag much more quickly.
  2. Drink two 8-ounce glasses before boarding, then another one each hour in flight.
  3. To preserve your hard-earned fitness level, exercise at least every third day while on the road, performing at least a third of your aerobic routine at your typical level of intensity and completing your strength training program at least once a week, using the same amount of resistance. Keeping at least part of your routine in tact will keep your energy level up.
  4. Walk the length of the plane every hour or two to keep your back happy, your muscles supple, and your blood circulating.
  5. If you're not traveling first or business class, book an emergency exit row aisle seat to enjoy a roomier seat with extra leg room.
  6. Hide the hotel clock. Knowing that it's 3 a.m. and you have to get up at 6 a.m. guarantees that you won't sleep for the remaining three hours.
  7. When eating out on the road, try ordering without looking at the menu. Arrive at the restaurant with a healthy meal in mind, like steamed vegetables or broiled chicken, and just order it.
